As a leader at our university, you are instrumental in guiding and driving our workforce to help us achieve new heights. Our Panthers Protecting Panthers Repopulation plan provides you an opportunity to heighten your leadership skills, creativity and innovative thinking in guiding your team toward achieving goals safely in the campus environment.

This supervisor resource guide is designed to assist you while managing your team(s) during the telework and remote work/work from home program as we work, learn, and earn in this on-campus and remote hybrid environment.

Aligned with our FIU Next Horizon 2025 Strategic Plan, we encourage you to leverage resources available through the HR Leadership website to help advance and hone in on your leadership skills in fostering a positive work environment.

COVID-19 HR Tools

The Division of Human Resources recognizes that COVID-19 has created significant challenges amongst our faculty and staff. As a result, FIU has developed the COVID-19 Emergency Policy. This policy provides both employees and supervisors options to reduce any potential financial hardship. For questions about this policy, contact the Division of Human Resources at 305-348-2181, or

Evaluative Hiring Process & Salary Actions

  • All vacant positions and positions that are in the search process are being formally evaluated and approved by the president, provost and chief financial officer (CFO) before they may be posted or filled. This evaluation will apply to all positions and funding sources with the exception of externally funded grant positions which are exempt from this review process. Departments must work with the Division of Human Resources to obtain the formal approval.

Professional Development

Supervisors are responsible for completing the following courses. Also supervisors are responsible for the full compliance with course completion of their staff.

  • Panthers Protecting Panthers: Covid-19 Safety course.
  • Kognito – At-Risk for Faculty and Staff course required to understand students in Distress.
  • Compliance courses assigned by the Office of Compliance & Integrity to supervisor and staff.

With supervisor prior approval, and sufficient budget, training may be used to supplement hours worked. Under this policy, effective from 5/16/2020 through 12/31/2020, up to 80 hours may be earned through training hours. Professional development allowability is also subject to restrictions for grant-funded and auxiliary positions.

Talent Share

Talent share matches FIU employees who can and want to work with an FIU department that needs more help. Supervisors should work directly with their HR liaisons to identify needs or employees available for work. The Talent Share work will be at the same pay level as the employee’s regular job. The home department will continue to cover the salary and benefits expenses.

Supervisors with new employees must set expectations regarding the remote work environment, and ensure that their new hires have the necessary equipment and system access to perform their duties.

  • New Employee Experience
    • In alignment with our temporary remote work program, New Employee Experience (NEE) will be held via Zoom.
    • Recruiters will work with hiring managers to schedule new employees as needed.

Please visit the onboarding page for more information.
