Compensation Philosophy

FIU’s compensation program is tailor-made to support, reinforce, and align with the Experience Impact 2030 strategic plan. The compensation program is grounded in the following guiding principles:

FIU designs and administers compensation in a manner that is financially responsible and sustainable to ensure FIU’s goal of good stewardship over entrusted funds.

As a preeminent public research university, FIU’s compensation policies and procedures are continuously reviewed for competitiveness with internal benchmarks and appropriate external markets including institutions of similar size, scope, and complexity within higher education.

Compliant

FIU compensates employees in compliance with federal, state, local laws and regulations, and applicable FIU Board of Trustees’ regulations and policies as well as Board of Governor’s regulations.

Job Family Career Ladders

Job families are grouped jobs which involve work of the same very broad nature or purpose, externally may also be known as functions (e.g. Information Technology, Human Resources, etc.). Sub families are groups of jobs within a job family that perform similar work, requiring varying levels of skill and responsibility, externally may also be known as specialty (e.g. Payroll or Benefits are sub families of Human Resources). Career levels denote different skill levels established for job codes with similar level of qualifications (e.g. Professional 1, Professional 2, etc.). Career ladders are the progressive levels of job codes that link career levels to job families and related sub families (e.g. Academic Advisor I, Academic Advisor II, etc.).

    General Administration

    Positions in this job family provide administrative and/or clerical support to a department, college, unit or division, an administrator, dean or executive, or to a project, program, grant or service through the coordination, management, administration, or support of operations. Professional and administrative level positions may lead the organization by planning, directing, and managing operations. This job family has a broad range of duties with varying degrees of complexity. Career paths are not restricted to one sub-family of jobs. Employees may progress through any sub-family as long as minimum qualifications are met and there is a business need for the level of work to be performed.

    Academic Support

    Jobs in the Academic Support Services job family provide administrative services that support the academic mission and goals of the university. This job family provides administrative support and academic services for students, program evaluations, assessments, accreditation, and performs statistical and institutional research. Primary consideration for placement into this job family is subject-matter expertise and may require advanced knowledge and expertise in order to perform needed services. This job family performs a broad range of duties with varying degrees of complexity. Employees may progress to other levels as long as minimum qualifications are met and there is a business need for that level of work to be performed. Student services seek to increase the retention, engagement, and success of students at FIU by providing tutoring, academic program guidance, skill assessment and development, and related services.

    Advancement

    Engages alumni, foundations, corporations, and the community with the mission of the university. The university’s mission is advanced through cultivating the support of donors both directly through solicitations and fundraising campaigns, and indirectly through alumni engagement, alumni and professional societies, and targeted campaigns that maintain positive relationships with potential donors and the community.

    Athletics

    Provides a key aspect of the university experience for students and student-athletes. The positions within this job family provide coaching, compliance, coordination of operations, equipment, facilities, conditioning, athletic training, and specialized administration of athletic programs and services.

    Business and Finance Operations

    Provides the university with critical information regarding operational, financial, and academic performance. Functions include managing and ensuring the financial compliance of the university’s finances, preparing university budgets, assisting  leadership in strategic planning, preparing required reports for external parties, and providing coordination and management of business policies and programs in order to effectively manage university resources, employees, finances, systems, and facilities. Business and financial operations include activities in finance, accounting, treasury, purchasing, and audit.

    Communications and External Relations

    Fosters effective communication between the university and its students, employees, alumni, and the public in order to advance the university’s strategic vision. Functions include communicating the university’s vision through targeted campaigns and programs, establishing a consistent and recognizable brand for the university to ensure continuity of communication and increased recognition, writing and designing communication materials for the university and its programs, creating print and digital materials to promote the university’s activities, creating content and programming for a variety of media platforms, delivering relevant programming to the community designed to engage listeners and viewers, and assisting programs across campus in producing media content related to coursework and extracurricular activities.

    Continuing Education

    Delivers and administers educational programs and curriculums for internal and external audiences to enhance educational learning and delivery.

    Engineering

    Conducts research and development activities related to the design, development, fabrication, modification, installation, and testing of state-of-the-art equipment, electronics, or electronic components in a lab or research setting. Functions include providing technical and professional expertise to projects such as research design and implementation, instrumentation, equipment development, maintenance management, statistical and data management, training and oversight regarding safe laboratory operations, supervision and training of students, and participation and authoring of research reports.

    Enrollment Services

    Jobs in Enrollment Services provide the university with end-to-end enrollment services to attract, retain, and register talented and diverse students to FIU. Functions include developing and executing strategic enrollment plans, recruiting, reviewing, and admitting qualified students, advising students and families on financial aid and scholarships, assisting students and faculty in the course registration process, determining student eligibility for course registration process, determining student eligibility for courses as well as credit, and maintaining sensitive and confidential student records.

    Human Resources

    Human Resources jobs serve to foster a healthy, productive, and inclusive workforce through the development and implementation of integrated and effective human resources programs, services, and policies. The Human Resources function advises and administers programs in the following areas: benefits, compensation, employee and labor relations, employment, HRIS, records, payroll, organizational development and training, and other related human resources services.

    Information Technology

    Provides reliable, secure, innovative, and customer-oriented information technology services and solutions to students, faculty, staff, and other members of the university community, and creates infrastructure, systems, strategies, programs, and services that leverage technology to fulfill the mission and objectives of the university. Information Technology at FIU includes information technology support, information security, networks and infrastructure, systems and operations, academic technology and information systems, business applications and services, web services, project management and solutions, and related functions.

    Learning Management

    Works with faculty members in the design, development, and modification of instructional programs, and helps faculty employ the use of instructional technology and serves as the technology expert.

    Legal and Compliance

    Jobs in this family provide legal or regulatory advice and representation to faculty, staff, senior administrators and the board of trustees. Other functions include monitoring and promoting compliance with university policies and regulations imposed by external agencies and local, state, and federal laws, assessing risk of non-compliance and recommending measures to mitigate these risks, investigating allegations of non-compliance, participating in the development of policies to promote compliance, advising faculty, staff, and senior administrators on compliance/regulatory issues, and providing compliance/regulatory training to university faculty, staff, and students.

    Library Services

    Develops and implements library services and programs that best serve the university community, collaborates with academic colleagues, students, and outside scholars to ensure that library collections are easily accessible and support academic research and instruction, monitors library policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as university policy, and utilizes expertise in library related issues as well as knowledge of current issues and trends within the library community to support/contribute to the library/museum’s short- and long-range strategic plans.

    Medicine and Health

    Promotes a healthy and productive university community, supports and provides healthcare, health education, wellness programs, and health promotion to the university and surrounding community, provides the community with clinical care such as physical therapy, health assessments, and mental health counseling, organizes educational programming, and distributes educational material to the community to promote healthy lifestyles.

    Museum Operations

    Develops and implements museum services and programs that best serve the university community, collaborates with academic colleagues, students, and outside scholars to ensure that museum collections are easily accessible and support academic research and instruction, and utilizes expertise in museum related issues as well as knowledge of current issues and trends within the museum community to support/contribute to the museum’s short- and long-range strategic plans.

    Physical Facilities

    Facilities job family serves to ensure the cleanliness, maintenance, and operation of campus facilities and grounds. Functions encompass custodial, grounds, and maintenance services, including oversight and programmatic administration.

    Research Administration

    Provides oversight in the administration and compliance of research activities that range from identifying funding sources, proposal submissions, grant management, and ensuring compliance with the use of human subjects and lab animals.

    Safety and Security

    Maintains a safe and secure university campus, monitors and mitigates potential risks to the campus, conducts daily patrols of campus, responds to disturbances, enforces university rules and local, state, and federal laws, develops health and safety procedures to ensure the well-being of the university community and visitors, analyzes environmental risks and develops plans to mitigate those risks, and is responsible for hazardous materials control, emergency preparedness, fire protection, radiological safety, accident prevention, air and water quality, and other environmental health and safety protocols.

    Services Operations

    Monitors campus transportation and parking activities and compliance with established policies, responsible for overseeing permit parking, parking enforcement, event transportation, business transportation, campus transit service, safety and training, and facility and operations maintenance, and leads, oversees, and directs auxiliaries including vehicle services, logistics, and postal services.

    Student Affairs

    Develops, implements, facilitates, and evaluates various programs focused on assisting students in successfully integrating into the university environment. Programs include those that support academic, co-curricular, student governance and leadership, and focused services to promote the retention and success of the multicultural population. Responsibilities include counseling student organizations, developing and providing career counseling to students, assisting students with career development, ensuring access and support to a wide range of students, investigating and resolving complex student disciplinary issues, acting as a liaison and establishing support networks within the university and community, and directing all university residence hall operations for students.
